The fact that he's a terrible father figure doesn't come into play as he exploits these children b/c he can't afford a decent pit crew. In one scene he was even feeding them Kentucky Fried Chicken instead of his delicious Roasters. He never provide them w/ a decent loving home cooked meal even though he knows how
